Cellulite is one of those problems that bothers many women these days. Cellulite treatments is part of every women magazine, health websites and other media, which means this is still a problem that women face. This problem is not gone.
By definition, cellulite is a persistent subcutaneous fat causing dimpling of the skin, especially on women’s hips and thighs. Cellulite is nothing more than normal fat beneath the skin. The dimpling of the skin appears because the fat pushes against connective tissue. This causes the skin above it to pucker.
There are many theories about what may cause the imbalance in the body that enables cellulite to appear. It seems that hormones, diet, lifestyle and genetics all play a role.
Causes of Cellulite
First of all, don’t think that because you are overweight you will have cellulite, or that if you are thin you will never have. Many factors play role. It’s a fact that women have more cellulite than men. In addition, genetics might be a base or influence the probability that you might have cellulite at one point in life.
According to WebMD, other factors that influence how much cellulite you might have are the following:
- Poor diet
- Fad dieting
- Slow metabolism
- Lack of physical activity
- Hormone changes
- Total body fat
- Thickness and color of your skin
Natural and Beneficial Cellulite Treatments
Dry Skin Brushing
This method is one of the most mentioned at-home cellulite treatments, not the most beneficial, but it feels great and helps stimulate blood and lymph flow in the body.
Dry skin brushing effectively opens up the pores on your skin. You should be doing this daily, even twice a day. Your skin should be dry, so the ideal time is in the shower before you turn on the water. Just a reminder, don’t get the brush wet.
How to do it correctly
To dry skin brush correctly, start higher lymph node areas like the armpits/groin, then move to the outer regions. Always move towards the heart. except when dry skin brushing the buttocks area. Be careful not to irritate your skin and make it red.
Type of brush
The bristles should be natural, not synthetic, and preferably vegetable-derived. The bristles themselves should be somewhat stiff, though not too hard. Look for one that has an attachable handle for hard-to-reach spots, if necessary.
Dry skin brushing is effective because it makes the epidermis tighter and helps to break up the toxic material cellulite is composed of. In addition to sloughing away dry skin on areas like knees, elbows and ankles, it promotes tighter skin, cell renewal and blood flow. Brushing also the aids in digestion and kidney function. You’ll also notice a glowy, smooth complexion.
A very popular combination among home remedies for cellulite, dry skin brushing while moisturizing with extra virgin coconut oil.
One individual on EarthClinic shares her positive experience using coconut oil and dry skin brushing.
“Organic coconut oil and dry brushing which is very popular in Europe for circulation and for eliminating cellulite…My massuese mentioned to me you always brush in the direction of the lymphatic system so that it can circulate it out of the system quickly also increase you water intake before beginning the dry brush massage this help the system elminate toxin. For problem areas I used to spend at least ten minutes total and followed by a hot shower and I step out of the hot shower and while my pores are still open I put coconut oil all over my body and have noticed a dramatic decrease very close to eliminating all the cellulite. So it does work.”
Other natural way to reduce cellulite is coffee scrubs. The massage and with coffee scrubs and exfoliation benefit the skin by stimulating the blood and lymph flow. The caffeine in the coffee has a tightening effect. This is at least worth a try. If nothing else, coffee smells great and this scrub will exfoliate skin:
1/4 cup coffee grounds
3 tablespoons sugar or brown sugar
2-3 Tablespoons of melted coconut oil
How to use it:
Massage in to skin for several minutes using firm pressure and wash as usual. You should do this 2-3 times a week. Results should be visible within a couple of weeks.
Detox Baths and Balancing Hormones
I love detox baths because they are relaxing, but yet another theory proclaims that toxin build-up in skin and fat tissues lead to cellulite. I couldn’t find any scientific evidence to back the toxin claim, but detox baths can be relaxing and great for the skin in other ways, so they are worth a try!
It seems that many sources agree that hormones play a large part in cellulite formation (one reason that women typically get it and men don’t). Even if it doesn’t help get rid of cellulite, balancing hormones helps in so many other ways that it is worth working on!
Apple Cider Vinegar
Another natural cellulite treatment is apple cider vinegar. I have found a recipe on how to use apple cider vinegar.
How to prepare it:
To prepare this mixture, add apple cider vinegar with 2 parts water and a bit of honey. Rub this mixture on the areas you need and then rinse with warm water. It may not get rid of cellulite for good, but it should help reduce the appearance.
Additionally, try making a body wrap: mix ACV and water in equal parts, and then rub it on the area. Afterward, wrap the areas in plastic wrap and a warm towel for 1 hour, then rinse. There are a lot of potential benefits of using the apple cider vinegar, which will be described in another post. Don’t miss this solution.
If you want to speed your metabolism, the green tea is a solution for you. Also it can help you burn fat by stopping the production of fat-absorbing enzymes. But, catechins found in green and white teas can also reduce insulin resistance. Drinking three cups a day could increase energy expenditure and help you to burn an extra 80 calories within one day. Try drinking tea in the morning instead of coffee.
Cellulite can make anyone feel self-conscious and burn through their wallets, but know that you don’t have to. The above solutions cost very little money and are accompanied by a countless other health benefits. Don’t give another dollar for expensive and questionable creams before trying some of the solutions.
And of course with any health problem, always consume plenty of healthful foods, avoid/reduce stress, and exercise regularly. An exercise that will help reduce or remove the cellulite in your thighs, is the kettle-bell workout. This will also help with cellulite reduction while improving your overall health.
