Herb garden – how to start

Herb garden can be made in anybody`s backyard. That`s because herbs can be grown in various of places. You just need good draining soil, water, compost, and a little sunshine.

Herb garden tips before you start

It is better to grow herbs in the ground, rather than in a pot.


Some herbs can grow more than 5ft, so putting them in a pot will distress them and will influence their development.

Many herbs love the sun, but if you live in an area where temperatures can go as high as 90 F degrees, consider putting them where is shaded in the afternoon.

Soil preparation

The soil becomes compacted over the years. You need to dig with a large garden fork. Then you need to add compost. This will improve the drainage of the soil in the herb garden and make it more fertilized.

Planting the herbs

Before planting you need to know that some herbs demand more space than others. So, plant Marjoram, Sage, Rosemary, Mints 3-4 feet apart, Tarragon, Basil, Thyme 2 feet apart and Parsley, Cilantro, Dill 1 feet apart. Use certified seeds or seedlings, as that is crucial for your herb garden production. Since temperatures and humidity


cause drying times to vary every week, you must check the soil often. Water dissolves minerals from the soil, which is crucial for your herb development. But over-watering will kill your plants in a matter of days.


For harvesting, you simply cut off about 1/3 of the branches when the plant reaches at least 6-8″ tall. By cutting close to a leaf intersection, your plants will regrow very quickly. Some plants, such as parsley, grow new leaves from their center. In this case, the oldest branches need to be completely removed, leaving the new tiny branches growing from the center. This becomes clearer as you watch your plants grow and mature.
